Midnight Moments: 11.Cold
"Remind me why we're walking all the way out here in this freezing weather?"
"It's my mother's Christmas party."
"Even though it's almost a month before?"
Penny gave me the look that dissuaded any other questions. Instead she just held out her hand for mine. It was her way of saying 'let's not discuss this matter and be civil about it'. I took her gloved hand in mine to show my willingness to cooperate. We walked the rest of the way in relative silence as wind blew around us. It did help that her mother just lived three blocks away from us. It was also how we met on a chilly day like this. A coffee spilled on the sidewalk by the apple tree near the junction.
As we reached the door to the apartment, Penny turned around and looked deep into my eyes. Her auburn eyes cutting through the weather. I leaned in to give her a peck on her cheek and she giggled.
"We'll let's have a Merry Christmas today. Even though it isn't yet."
She gave me another look and we went in together.
